Beesweet – Get to know the story and founders

More than eco products, we just love eco stories. And behind the brands we talk about, there are always good ones.

We talked with Ana Pais, the CEO and co-founder of Beesweet – More Than Honey, a brand that sells 100% Portuguese organic certified hive products.

How did the idea of BeeSweet start? Share a bit of the story and the people behind the project.

Based on and inspired by my grandfather’s family heritage, starting from 100% Portuguese Certified Organic honey, we create natural aromas which are present in the honey, to different gastronomic suggestions.

Beesweet arises from the passion of two young cousins for honey, bees and innovation and the dream of putting on the market innovative products based on honey.

Carla and I grew up together and we often participated in the honey crests back home. The bees existed in the backyard of our grandfather’s house, just like a domesticated animal. They were cared for and watched over time, so that every spring and end of summer, we could savor the remains in the beehives. I remember when he used to give us pieces of honeycomb to eat …. Hummmm it was a sensation and a divine taste!

This pleasure and taste for bees and honey, always existed in us. It’s part of our family culture. So, at a time when we were more and more discouraged professionally, we decided to put our dream into practice.

Our grandfather left us the legacy, the history, the tools, the recipes, the tips, and we wanted to present all this to the market, with a character and an image of our own.

6 years ago we decided to restart our professional path together. In the first year, we put our business idea to the test, created our first products, the flavoured nectars, carried out analyses, created partnerships, participated in entrepreneurship training and won some competitions.

Currently, the company has more than 40 references, always based on products from the beehive. We make our products available in some reference partners such as the Clube del Gourmet in El Corte Inglés, in Portugal.

Our care in purchasing raw materials goes far beyond the quality or price factor. The way the bees are cared for in the apiaries is a selection factor for us. We often make a point of going to the apiaries and helping out during the growing season, in order to create empathy with the partners and understand how the bees are doing.

With the focus on supporting the community from day one, we give talks at schools, universities and municipalities in order to promote and explain the importance of the bee in the world.

What were your concerns on product development, relating sustainability? Share your practices in terms of product creation, waste management, packaging, shipping or other areas.

The innovation of the nectars consists in the combination of organic honey, with BIO certification PT-BIO-05, 100% Portuguese, with aromatic plants or natural raw materials such as cocoa or seaweed, able to direct each flavor to distinct gastronomic suggestions, providing a unique tasting experience.

Our flavoured nectar is aged in vats for a few hours in order to obtain a new product with a distinctive aroma and flavour.

The whole process is carried out in a family and artisanal way, respecting all hygiene and food safety requirements.

As an example, we created the nectar N. 88 Fire – a spicy flavour that is wonderful combined with soft cheeses. Or N. 66 Beelove – chocolate flavour, which is delicious when put on pancakes, pancakes or pancakes.

The company’s innovation goes beyond its products and combines a passion for bees, creativity and innovation with sustainability. Our business concept has meant that over time the company has won several recognition awards – proof of the quality of the products sold, the concern for the community and the environment, the way it relates to suppliers, partners and customers and the way it is in the market.

My favourite Nectar is 25 Christmas, cinnamon flavoured, because it reminds us of Christmas sweets, like “rabanadas” (similar to French toast) or “sonhos”

Carla’s favourite Nectar is 88 Fire, spicy flavour, she loves it, even combined with sushi.
